All pebbles crunching underfoot
along a bush track striding
an avenue of tall gum trees
with koalas high, abiding

Around a curve, and down the end
with all branches interlaced
there she-oaks stand together
for to hide their secret place

To enter there is special
a place to most unknown
where countless wildlife gather
in the intertidal zone

Still and silent emptiness
does greet ones ears at first
but once atuned to nature
sweet songs around do burst

Underfoot the mud protests
each step that I do take
but kindly rafts of samphire
do a pliant carpet make

A familiar scent does nostrils fill
I raise eager eyes to see
the kangaroos all upright stand
then bound away so free

The birds they are a feeding
both in water and on grass
they raise their heads and step aside
just inviting me to pass

It is a symphony of harmony
within that place alone
where all is quiet and peaceful
in the intertidal zone

Intertidal Zone

Lake Coombabah is a saltwater tidal lake, and around it's perimeter is the "intertidal zone". The area between the high and low water marks.

This zone is very ecologically important, for wildlife to breed and to feed. Mangroves grow on one side, with she-oak stands on the other, and in between both green and reddish samphire cover the red mud.

To me it is a very special place.
