On the Gold Coast broadwater there are always pelicans about, and of course the ever
present Silver Gull (Larus novaehollandiae) is there to take what they can from us or the
pelicans. This pelican was tossing the fish into the air, trying to get it to go down head
first (so the spines fold back), and didn't realise how close he came to losing it.

love the photo and the poem especially the last two verses. The poem adds a dimension to to photo which otherwise might have been overlooked. I know that seagulls are cheeky but I didn,t realise just how brazen they can be.The new latin name is very appropriate.

This photo is also begging for a clever caption.

Mooching Optimist

A "Moocher optimisticae"
that is my latin name
to lurk and loiter everyday
that is my practised game

To pilfer and to steal
with methods hardly quiet
a free and tasty meal
which is my given right

A 'tater chip, or piece of fish
are favourites on my diet
if the humans grant my wish
it always starts a riot

It is a work of art
from a pelican to steal
and if I'm not too smart
I could end up, the meal

An optimist and winner
I'll hover from behind
then quickly snatch his dinner
I'm sure he wouldn't mind
