This Royal Spoonbill (Platalea regia) was photographed beside the mangroves in the Coombabah Lake.
Normally very difficult to get close to, this bird was so intent on feeding in the shallows, as it walked in my
direction, it didn't see me waiting with camera in hand. They grow to about 80cm or 20", and may be found
right across Australia, except in the arid west.

Royal Spoonbill

With eyes of crimson
and brows of yellow
all feathers white
a handsome fellow

His bill is long
and wildly patterned
and down the end
is roundly flattened

When they breed
from the nape about
as an adult show
long plumes do sprout

Down in the shallows
where fishes hide
they sway their bill
from side to side

Long legs of black
and measured stride
a regal bird
that walks with pride
