The scientific name for this species of grasshopper is Atractomorpha similis. It belongs to the Pyrgomorphinae sub family, the tribe Atractomorphini, and the genus Atractomorpha.
These grasshoppers are reluctant to fly or hop away, but prefer to hide. Often seen in vegetable gardens, thus the common name "Vegetable Grasshopper". They are also called "Northern Grass Pyrgimorph".
At only about 40mm in length (males), they are quite small, and the females are smaller still. This one is feeding on the flower of the Evening Primrose.
